Fequently Asked Questions Over the past few years we've been asked several questions, about newsgroups, bittorrent and the files within, more than ones:) The following are the most Fequently Asked Questions, with answers. When you click the links below, you will see the question and answer at the top of the screen. To return to the top of the page at any time, click the Back button in your browser. .bin and .cue files. What are they and how do I use them? Getting Audio, but no Video, or Vice Versa. What do I need to do? Can I watch movies I download from my computer, on my TV, using my DVD player? What are .001 files and how do I use them? What is a .nfo file and how do I open it? .bin and .cue files. What are they and how do I use them? The bin and cue files are a CD image. You need CDRWin or Nero to make the CD. Most burning programs can burn bin cue files following simililiar procedures to the once lists below and shown in the video lessons, linked to below. Nero and CDRWin are posted regularly to newsgroups. See Lesson 7 of the newsgroups tutorials for instruction on searching for files using New Rover. Usage instructions: Nero
For a video demonstration Check out Lesson 4 of the DVD2SVCD Lessons. Another video demonstration, see Lesson 4 of the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 Guide CDRWin
Getting Audio, but no Video or vice versa. What do I need to do? Sounds like you don't have the right codec installed. See Definitions for more on codecs. See Lesson 6 for more on codecs. Nimo on Lesson 6 or the Ace Mega Codec Pack will install just about every codec you will ever need. Warning! Do not install both Nimo and Ace Mega at the same time. Install one or the other.
I'm not able to see all the newsgroups, listed in the popup window, in News Rover. What am I doing wrong? Sounds like your ISP's news server doesn't support all the newsgroups. What you need is a news service provider. Here's a list www.newshosting.com This is the service we use. They have an unlimited download plan for just $15 a month.
I've downloaded several AVI files that I'd like to combine to make a longer movie. How do I join AVI and/or MPG files? For .mpg files use Camel's MPEG Join.
For .avi files use Peck's Power Join
It will join the files and you will have one .avi file to watch.
Can I watch movies I download from my computer, on my TV, using my DVD player? Yes, you can. Most DVD players can play VCD, SVCD and DVDR movies and it's just a matter of burning them to a disk. For a video demonstration of burning movies to a CD-R or DVDR, check out Lesson 4 of the DVD2SVCD Lessons. Another video demonstration, see Lesson 4 of the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 Guide You'll need to make sure your DVD player supports the format the movie is in. DVDRHelp.com has an extensive list of DVD players and the formats they support. The other movies you'll find are in AVI format and for the most part use either the XviD or DivX codec. These codecs give you better image quality that VCD, SVCD and DVDR. The disadvantage of DivX and Xvid is that most DVD players won't play them. You can however, if you want to watch them on your TV, convert them to VCD, SVCD or DVDR format. Check out the DVD2SVCD Lessons, lesson 3. Note: Be sure to watch the first 2 lessons first.
What are .001 files and how do I use them? .001 files are just like .rar files. To extract the .001 files you'll need Winrar. Winrar is very similiar to Winace, which you've learned how to use in the News Group Tutorials. Winrar's advantage is it's ability to extract .001 files Usage Instuctions:
Note: One more thing about .001 files. If you've found the .001 files in a porn news group, chances are that it's in a slightly different format. For these files you need HJ-Split Lesson 5 of the newsgroup lessons about 12 minutes into the video explains how to use it.
I extracted a set of files and now I have 3 files .ccd, .img and .sub. What are they? These files make up a CD image. Just like bin and cue files. To make a CD from these files you'll need CloneCD. You can download CloneCD from newsgroups. See Lesson 7 of the News Group Tutorials for instuction on searching for files using News Rover. Usage Instuctions:
Click "Next" then "OK" to burn the CD.
What is a .nfo file and how do I open it? A .nfo is a text file. This file is usually included with a newsgroup post, either inside the files or as a seperate file. It contains specific information about the files posted. For example: If it's a movie post it will tell the name of the movie, the format (DivX, XviD, VCD, SVCD or DVDR), the size of the movie and how many disks it fits on. Open .nfo files using a text editer like Notepad, Wordpad or MS Word. Lesson 6 of the newsgroups lessons explains more about .nfo files.
I'm seeing .rar files with the file name ***part1.rar , ***part2.rar , but no .r00 .r01 files. How do I extract these? The part01.rar files are just like the regular .rar, .r00, .r01 files. Treat them the same as you would any other .rar set. Right-click the part1.rar file and choose Extract to \folder name. Lesson 5 of the newsgroups lessons explains more about .rar files. |
